"The Chain"    Music and lyrics by Cass von Braun.
Vocal by Cass von Braun

S E T T I N G

The singer is Dean Fada, a gypsy raconteur who many years ago was Kate's lover.

Life with her husband, who is Dean of Academic Life at Barnyard University, is driving Kate crazy. She has discovered Fada is living in a residential hotel off campus, and rented rooms there for herself in the hope of reconnecting with him. She doesn't know that her daughter Miranda and her sister Mary both have already staked claims on this man.

In this song, Kate has confessed to Fada that she is losing her mind. He consoles, cajoles and seduces her with this song.

L Y R I C

In infinite realms in intricacies
Stretched out upon a finite grid

[Was I like this?]

You still run free, wild as you can be
Linking anima, mama, straight back to the id

[I want to be good] [If only I could]

What good could even a John Adams do
If he be born in the seige of Rome
What good could even Adam's child do
Except that we needed him
And he was there
In his very own place
In his very own time

[In his very own place, in his very own time]

You are a living flame
You burn again and again
A link will remain to the Chain
And that's your first best thing
Put the flame to the chain
To the Chain of Being

[Where can my love be? How can I be happy?
Well, there are many places where happiness can begin!]

Try a mode of a minor harmonic scale
Beginning with the fifth degree
What else is there in ritual
Time. Place. Necessity

To be a living flame
You burn again and again and again
A link will remain to the chain
Here's your first best thing
Put the flame to the chain
To the Chain of Being

[May I sit in peace, served by someone, not me?
Now? Here?? So tell me, doyou want me
To have the run of the place?? And, anyway . . .]

The efficacy in brewing tea
The metaphysics of breaking bread
Prove it again and again and again
Even your mind is more than something
That is all in your head.

It is a living flame
It burns again and again and again and again
A link will remain to the chain
And that's the first best thing
Keep the flame on the chain
The Chain of Being

Put the flame to the chain
Of the chain on the chain
The Chain of Being
