S E T T I N G scene ii

Kate Revere, escaping the maddening ennui of life with her husband, is considering moving into a residential hotel.

She asks about the "The Rules of the House," saying she "can't say yes unless the rules of the house are laid out on the table, plain and simple." In this aria, the landlady, Miss Galadrial, replies.

Listen

L Y R I C

We've laid them out! Yes, right enough!
We've rested the rules in this house
Cheri, you have a fetching dimple!
(peals of laughter)

ad lib: Very well then. How shall I put this?
or: Don't look so worried! Very well, I will explain it for you!

We HAD some rules -- there were handy, like tools
We used to bend a few
And there were genders, then
As I remember
But, sadly, only two
When to thine own self be true
Turned "thou shall not" into "don't be a prude,"
What happened next was strictly impromptu

Eschew taboo, adieu to those who
Won't take the chance to dance life's masquerade
Of thought there have always been millions of schools
And we like to blend and to BEND the old jewels
It takes a fine set of fools to evoke a ball and make life fun
We had some rules, but broke them all, now there are none!

(She emits joyful laughter)

The rules of the joint? I'll come straight to the point
I'm afraid they've all been broken
A preacher and a teacher moved in
But it turned out even they were token!
If the boys in 2B come out, we might find a rule or two those guys could flout
Yet the censure would be left out, unspoken

Eschew taboo, adieu to those who
Won't take the chance to dance life's masquerade
Of thought there have always been millions of schools
And we like to blend and to BEND the old jewels
It takes a fine set of fools to evoke a ball and make life fun
We had some rules, but broke them all, now there are none!

(Do, please, excuse me if you feel that I am gawking
Pardon my eyes if they seemed to eat you up
While we were supposedly talking)

KATE
I've decided to take it!

MISS GALADRIAL
Ooooooh!

SFX a key scratches in the lock. The front door opens, and Dean Fada enters.
